Lets say that if you were take a few Pluralsight courses, and get smarter in [security, databases, design, graphics, UX, a plethora of programming, and my favorite: professional development and soft skills :p], lets just say that your new learning leads you to earning ONE dollar per hour more in your company. That is worth about $2,080 PER YEAR. Pretty good investment. Look, your learning didnt stop when you graduated. Every bit of your job is likely being computerized dont you think you should understand more tech? A college degree. Okay, lets go the hear of job security (cough cough). A degree in computer science. Im not even going to put money into this one you can figure that out on your own (its likely at least $3,000/year for four or five years which is super low). Lets just talk about TIME. You spend four or five years going to school to be in classes where they are not using current versions of languages, so by the time you graduate you might not have seen or used the languages at the companies that hire you. Been there, done that. And you spent four years in archaic language. Sounds expensive to me. That was fun. I could go on. But I dont need to. You get the point. Look, this is just a little more than a netflix subscription. But with Pluralsight, you could walk into an entirely different career. Treat yourself. Get this $100 off deal. How to Clarify Your Brands Visions #MondayMotivation Whilst looking for  the dictionary definition of motivation, I came across this  simple yet interesting definition of the word. The definition of motivated, is to provide someone a reason for doing something. After considering this for a while I realised that this is what motivation comes down to, that to have a truly motivated workforce, you need to have a clear company vision, and know why youre doing what youre doing. By understanding your own values and your vision, you can involve your employees in this, which in turn motivates them and creates  a highly productive workplace. So what are the ways that you can clarify your vision? Realise the small targets you need to hit along the way When considering your vision, its important to remember the small steps that will get you to where you eventually want to be. Instead of laying out exactly where you want to be in 10 years, instead you should set short term targets to hit along the way. These targets of course add up and will get you to where you want to be. Set three year targets or even yearly ones. It keeps the vision more attainable and realistic. Keep it simple Keep the vision simple. You should be able to articulate your company vision in 100 words or less. Making sure you keep your vision short and simple will ensure that your vision is full of the things that are the most important to you. Make goals  achievable Dont include unachievable goals in your vision. It just creates disappointment when you dont reach them, which is disheartening for both yourself and your employees. Instead, set goals that you will actually be able to hit, and if they prove too small, you can always tweak them as your go along. Tweak and perfect As mentioned in the previous point, its important to tweak and adjust your vision as time goes by. Your vision will change and naturally evolve, so make sure you honour this in your vision statement. Every few months you should take a look at where you are and how far away your targets are. From here, you can work out which ones need to be adjusted and which ones are achievable. Be specific Its helpful for both employees and yourself to lay out very specific goals. Instead of saying We want to be the best brand within the industry, why not aim for a specific award or amount of customers? This makes the vision clear for all. This also makes the goals measurable. This job description shows why we need to fight for feedback Job descriptions are the worst. Full of cliches and buzzwords sometimes it’s hard to tell what the job is, never mind whether you’re qualified enough for it. The job description that made headlines last week though, attracted attention for a very different reason. A London events venue directed an angry and frustrated rant at ‘millennials’ who they complained ‘don’t know how to exist in the real world’ and aren’t ‘grafters’. The letter rightly provoked outcry, making national headlines, and has since been removed. But from the perspective of a graduate who has been applying for jobs and grad schemes for the past six months, the attitude expressed here isn’t actually that rare. This lack of communication between employers and graduates is all too common, and leads employers to treat candidates unfairly. This in turn knocks candidates confidence and makes them less likely to apply for ambitious roles in future.   So what needs to change? How can both students, graduates and employers work together to make the graduate recruitment market an easier process for all of us? Stop calling us millennials The first thing employers need to understand: We’re. Not. All. The. Same. The term ‘millennial’ encompasses everyone born over a period of around 20 years. And just like every other generation in history, this includes people from a wide range of backgrounds, sexualities, cultures and genders, with different beliefs, skills and attitudes. It is the belief that all ‘millennials’ are just avocado-eating Starbucks consumers that has led to an attitude in graduate recruitment that is exemplified in the job description above. The job market is becoming increasingly competitive, but that doesn’t mean employers can just treat candidates as one number in many. Applicants deserve better communication and transparency throughout the recruitment process, that will help them to improve and encourage them to keep applying for more jobs. This will also help businesses better target the candidates with the right skills and experience. It’s not all about the money According to the job description, young people don’t know how to ‘live in the real world’ where ‘every penny counts’. The ongoing debate about young people’s attitude to money suggests that we’re not interested in working hard and saving, and that we just expect hand outs from a ‘magic money tree’. Money is of course an important factor when applying for jobs, but so is job satisfaction, personal development and social purpose. Many graduates are more concerned about finding a job that is a ‘good fit’ for their attitudes and beliefs, rather than a job that just pays lots of money. Thinking otherwise suggests we don’t actually care about the jobs we’re applying for, and all we’re after is the pay. But most graduates haven’t spent three years at university and accrued £40,000 in debt just to pocket a pay cheque each month. We want to put our skills to good use, and if we receive a rejection, we want to know why so we can improve for next time. The jobs we’re applying for and the skills we need for them, are important to us, and getting employers to pass on their feedback, especially after a face-to-face interview, isn’t too much to ask. It’s time to #FightForFeedback In fact, here at Debut, we think it should be a legal requirement. Weve submitted a white paper calling on the government to encourage employers to follow a set of feedback guidelines. Yes, graduates need this feedback in order to improve and go on to secure another job. But the fight for feedback is also just one small part of a wider revolution in the graduate recruitment sector that has been long overdue. Although job descriptions like the one above are thankfully rare, the attitude that underpins it is unfortunately not. Students and graduates need to start taking power back into their own hands. Employers need to establish a good reputation among students, just as much as students need the jobs they offer. Most would argue that a company that doesn’t treat its job applicants with respect isn’t a company worth working for. So the fight for feedback is in everyone’s best interests. If students are prepared to  complete lengthy application forms and undergo rigorous assessment centres, as well as fork out hundreds of pounds to attend interviews up and down the country, they deserve some feedback after a face-to-face interview. It’s a simple concept, and many big employers such as O2, Fujitsu, Network Rail, Capgemini, EY and FDM Group have already backed the campaign. But we need your help too. We’ve submitted a white paper calling on the government to encourage quality feedback after interviews, and we need to show them that this is an issue young people care about. Performance Under Pressure... What Are YOU Really Made Of - Pathfinder Careers Performance Under Pressure What Are YOU Really Made Of? I just got back from speaking at a global educational conference overall, the experience was incredible with amazing programs and powerful educational tracks. This was my 4th time attending as a presenter, yet I felt that I walked away from the conference having learned just as much as I had shared. However, there was a bigger lesson afoot here at this conference that I could not have anticipated. During my own presentation, the projector used for my PowerPoint started flickering ominously before I even took the stage. Not a good sign. Normally, I can give a presentation without slides, but since this session was all about online reputation management, it was even more important to have these visuals as well as access to the Internet to  illustrate the points that I was making during the talk. And you know what? That projector just about was my undoing. But I  didnt let it. Talk about performance under pressure about 200 people were in the room anticipating this presentation while the balky projector wobbled between a clear picture, a flickering one, and then to a completely black screen and then back again. ((I am partially convinced there was a gremlin in there just teasing me, waiting to see how I handled it.)) The situation not being optimum for any kind of presentation, I decided to soldier ahead, and despite the fact that after 4 attempts to fix the projector, the same problem existed, yet I still managed to deliver my presentation. But what I learned  that day is that even when our own worst nightmares come true, but we can and do come out on the other side alive and just fine. Everyone in that room was there to learn and I connected to that energy. By staying grounded in the subject matter, I managed to deliver on the goods. It wasnt perfect; I did lose my presenting rhythm when the techs were unplugging cables and scrambling practically around my legs as they replaced parts. But I could tell that most people in the audience were with me the entire time and were engaged. Regardless of the wonky projector. And that truly helped me get through the experience. The most powerful lesson I learned that day was that when we perform under pressure, we learn more about the stuff from which we are made. What can we handle? How do we handle it? How do we work through challenges that seem insurmountable and seemingly stand in the way of our achieving our desired outcomes? Me? I found that laying in a little humor about the projector situation, asking for the audiences  forbearance, then pushing through to stay on topic helped me survive every presenters nightmare.  Id often wondered how it would feel if the worst happened during a presentation that I had spent  a long time preparing for went due south. But now I know. Taking some of the fear out of the unknown also gives us strength to face future challenges. We have a better sense of self and can learn from how we handled previous situations. Thats the powerful tool that learning can be. We find out what we are really made of!
